SUMMARY:Chamber Choir to perform service of ‘Lessons and Carols’
DESCRIPTION:The Northwestern State University Chamber Choir will present a candlelight service of “Lessons and Carols” Tuesday\, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 145 Church St. in Natchitoches. Admission is free and open to the public. Dr. Shane Thomas will conduct the Chamber Choir. This is the 34th consecutive year the NSU Chamber Choir has presented this service. \nThe “Lessons and Carols” is a service based upon a century-old tradition established at Kings College\, Cambridge\, in England\, where it is performed every Christmas Eve to standing room only crowds and broadcast worldwide on the BBC. “Lessons and Carols” consists of nine lessons\, readings for both the Old and New Testament of the Bible\, all related to the Advent and birth of Christ. Following each lesson\, the choir sings a text that relates to each of the readings. During the carols\, altar servers light a variety of candles\, which remain lit throughout the service. Gradually\, the church is transformed from darkness into light as the Service concludes in a festive recessional. \nThe Northwestern Chamber Choir\, founded in 1987\, is the flagship choral ensemble at Northwestern State. The Northwestern Chamber Choir is made up of 32 undergraduate and graduate singers encompassing various majors throughout the university. The choir often collaborates with composers and conductors for projects and regularly tours across the region. The Northwestern Chamber Choir was the featured choir at the 2017 Louisiana Music Educators Association conference. In 2021\, they placed in the top four of the Leonardo da Vinci Choral Competition in Florence\, Italy. The Chamber Choir has also placed second in the Laurea Mundi Budapest in Budapest\, Hungary\, and Second and Best Interpretation in the AVE VERUM ICC in Baden\, Austria. In February 2024\, Chamber Choir was selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Southern Regional Conference in Louisville\, Kentucky – the only choir chosen to represent the State of Louisiana.

DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this tour is to familiarize visitors with some of the notable people from the area buried in the American Cemetery\, the oldest cemetery in Natchitoches. Over the years\, planters\, businessman\, politicians\, and educators have all made their mark on Natchitoches and the surrounding area. The markers in the cemetery tell stories of the region’s people and act as an outdoor museum dedicated to their legacy. \nFree and open to the public. The tour starts at the American Cemetery\, 2nd Street entrance\, next to Holy Cross Church. The tour lasts 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Weather and Staff Permitting.

DESCRIPTION:The second LSMSA Exploration Day of the Fall ’24 semester is planned for Friday\, Dec. 6\, 2024. Exploration Days are an excellent opportunity to get a first-hand look at what LSMSA is all about. During these Open House events\, prospective students sit in on classes while their parents hear from the school’s administration. Parents and students tour the campus\, meet current LSMSA students\, and have lunch in the dining hall. Exploration Days generally begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude around 2:00 p.m. LSMSA will provide a letter for students to take to their schools confirming their attendance. There is no charge to attend an Exploration Day. \n\nWho should attend? We encourage students who are currently in the eighth grade or higher to attend an Exploration Day\, along with their parents or guardians. Students who are younger than eighth grade who are traveling with their older sibling may attend; however\, they should accompany their parents to parent activities.
