SUMMARY:MOVE: Echoes of Self
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern State University’s College of Arts and Sciences will present “MOVE: Echoes of Self\,” an interdisciplinary performance April 9-11 in Theatre West. Performance times are April 9 and 10 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and April 11 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public\, with limited seating available. Reservations can be made through Eventbrite at\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/move-echoes-of-self-tickets-1983966368816. Those wishing to attend can also scan the QR code on the event flyer or email hon@nsula.edu to reserve seats.\nThe performances are also made possible by a gift from Dr. Kathleen Byrd\, former head of NSU’s School of Social Sciences.\nDirected by Assistant Professor of Dance Nhan Ho\, “MOVE: Echoes of Self” brings together collaborators from across disciplines\, including dance\, music and visual arts\, to explore identity\, connection and transformation through an immersive performance experience. The work integrates movement\, interactive sound and projection-based visuals\, creating an environment where performers and technology respond to one another in real time.\n“This project explores how we exist in relation to ourselves and others\,” said Ho. “Through movement\, touch and shared space\, performers generate both physical and sonic responses\, allowing each moment to unfold through interaction rather than a fixed narrative.”\nMembers of the cast are Ellie Dufrene of Schriever\, Ruben Kho of Alexandria\, Tristan Olivier of Lutcher and Liza White of Baton Rouge.\nThe performance features evolving sections that highlight collaboration and adaptability\, with performers exchanging roles throughout the run. Sensors\, microphones and projection elements are used to translate breath\, contact and motion into sound and imagery\, emphasizing the relationship between the internal body and the external environment.\nDeveloped through the Catalyst Team\, the project reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary research and creative practice within the College of Arts and Sciences. Students and faculty have collaborated across disciplines\, engaging in a process that merges artistic exploration with technological experimentation. The goal is to foster cross-disciplinary engagement\, innovation\, and experiential learning beyond the traditional classroom setting.

SUMMARY:“Music for Chamber Orchestras”
DESCRIPTION:The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra will present a concert titled “Music for Chamber Orchestras” on Tuesday\, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall.\n\n\nDouglas Bakenhus is the orchestra’s music director. Andrej Kurti is assistant conductor. Karla Gonzalez and Sofiko Tchetchelashvili are instructors.\n\n\nTickets are $16.50 each and can be purchased online at https://nnssla.org/. There is an added charge for buying tickets online. For more information\, email NSUsymphony@gmail.com.\n\n\nThe orchestra will play “Divertimento for Brass and Percussion” by Karel Husa\, “Serenade in D Minor Op. 44\, for Winds\, Cello and Double Bass” by Antonín Dvorák\, “Concerto Grosso Op.3\, No. 3\, in G Major” by George Frideric Handel featuring soloists Oscar Andres Carballo Torres on violin and Tucker Uebersax on flute and “Symphony No. 6 in D Major\,” (Le Matin) by Franz Joseph Haydn with soloists Parrel K. Appolis on flute\, Carlos Diaz del Valle on violin and Brad Christian Powell on cello.\n\n\n“The four pieces are from four different time periods: baroque\, classical\, romantic and 20th century\,” said Bakenhus. “The piece by Husa is from the 20th century. The Dvorak work is 19th century romantic and are both Czech. Then the Handel piece is late baroque from the 1730s and the Haydn work is early classical from the 1760s.”\n\n\n\n\n\nBakenhus said both the Handel and Haydn works are influenced by baroque Italian “Concerto Grosso” which has groups of soloists. The piece by Handel has a flute and violin solo\, and the Haydn piece has flute\, violin and cello. However\, the Haydn piece is composed in a classical style and is just influenced by the baroque concerto grosso\, according to Bakenhus.
