DESCRIPTION:Natchitoches may not be typical of how a rural French community adapted to the influx of Americans after the Louisiana Purchase. Its position on the frontier and the early presence of three American institutions – a military fort\, an Indian agency\, and a federal trading post – makes it unique. During this period\, Natchitoches was a hub of activity. Events on the Spanish/American frontier narrowly avoided a war\, concerns with the loyalties of the Native Americans resulted in trade and a Grand Council\, and filibuster efforts and migration brought hundreds of people to Natchitoches as they traveled westward into Texas. Dr. Kathleen Byrd will share some of these stories. \nUntil her retirement\, Kathleen M. Byrd was the director of the School of Social Sciences at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. DESCRIPTION:The 37th Don’t Die Wondering Golf Classic\, set for Sept. 13 at Northwestern Hills Golf Course\, on the state Highway 1 bypass\, remains the primary fundraising effort for the women’s basketball program under sixth-year head coach Anna Nimz.\nThe Don’t Die Wondering Golf Tournament began in 1989 at the behest of former head coach James Smith\, who took the phrase from a locker room speech by former NSU point guard Angela Ortega.\nEntry fees for this year’s event are $450 per team or $125 per individuals playing solo. The four-person\, 18-hole\, scramble format tournament will begin at 8 a.m.\, with a shotgun start.\nDuring their round\, golfers will have the opportunities to shoot for two new cars with a hole-in-one challenge as well as have their golf skills challenged throughout the course with various games\, skill challenges and other surprises along the way.\nFood and drinks will also be available at the club house and throughout the course.\nVisit www.NSUDemons.com/DDW for additional details on the tournament and information on how to sign up yourself of your team.\nHole sponsorships and corporate sponsorships for the event are also available.
