Cane River Lake

Imagine fishing all day and then docking at the pier on the riverfront of Natchitoches’ Landmark Historic District for dining and celebrating the one that got away!

The Cane River Lake was formed from a portion of the Red River located in Natchitoches Parish, LA.  Called a “river”, it is actually a 36-mile long lake created after the Red River shifted course in 1836.  The Cane River Lake is best known for providing the backdrop for downtown Natchitoches, Louisiana’s oldest city.  Downriver includes the Cane River Federal Heritage Area, historic Melrose on the Cane, the National Cane River Creole Historical Park and Isle Breville’s St. Augustine Church.  The downriver area of the Cane River Lake gained prominence as a Creole de couleur culture, and it’s cultural importance draws visitors from all over the world.

The Cane River Lake is also known as one of North Louisiana’s best kept fishing secrets.  Smooth water, lush vegetation and beautiful sites along the river draw fishing enthusiasts to spend a day or two enjoying river life in Natchitoches Parish.  Camps, vacation rentals and RV parks, along with boat launches and gas stops are available for public use.  The most popular catch is largemouth bass, along with crappie, catfish, white bass and striped bass.
